London School of Art is an award-winning performing arts school that contracts professional, experienced tutors to work within their school. All instrument lessons are one to one based and take place at the school's premises or alternatively online.
Instrument lessons are available 7 days a week, after school as well as weekends.
The Drum & Percussion Department at the London School of Arts offers you a structured and fun way of learning drums.
We provide one to one lessons on drum set and hand percussion, allowing you to target any of these as your principal instrument. We offer you professional tutors who specialize in each of these disciplines, course work specifically designed to enhance your abilities. In LSA we encourage young students who are interested in music to take drumming lessons as it is a really good exercise for the brain and also great fun. It is scientifically proven that the physical transmission of rhythmic energy to the brain synchronizes the left and right hemispheres. So, when the logical left hemisphere and the intuitive right hemisphere of your brain begin to pulsate together, your inner guidance system or intuition becomes stronger.
Drumming is not only beneficial to children’s brain but also their physical development and fitness. Drumming increases heart rate and blood flow, as the entire body is used while drumming; the fingers, hands, wrists, elbows, arms, shoulders, and legs. Therefore, drumming students seem to develop a better understanding of the rhythms of their own bodies.
We work mainly with the Rock School exam board but of course, we can prepare students for Trinity if requested.
Grade exams require a high level of commitment through regular practice as well as a strong parental involvement. It’s the parent’s responsibility to encourage and monitor students is practicing at home. Minimum 20mins 4 times a week is required. As the grades get higher of course more time is needed to put in practice.
Key features of each grade are different and as follows:
Preliminary Grade: Tunes and pieces specially composed for this test, to enables pupils to practice and demonstrate important musical skills, such as a sense of pitch and rhythm, controlled and even playing, accuracy, and quality of tone.
Grades 1: At Grade 1 the pieces last up to a maximum of 1 minute 15 seconds. Pieces are over two pages and the length of the piece is designed to enable the candidate to remain focused on the requirements of notation, technical control, coordination, balance, and sync. Moving between cymbals, open hi-hats, syncopated accents, as well as single and double strokes, paradiddles, and playback skills.
Grade 2: 8th note triplets, four-way coordination, syncopation. As well as single and double strokes, paradiddles, flams, triplets. Finally, playback and performance skills (this is tested in each grade up to 8)
Grade 3: Introduction of solo and improvisation passages, reggae one-drop feel, syncopated pushes. And again, single and double strokes, paradiddles, flams, triplets ending with playback, and performance skills.
Grade 4: Solo and Improvisation passages, ghost snare, rim shot, riding on the toms. Single and double strokes, paradiddles, Flams and ruffs, hands, and feet patterns.
Grade 5: Snare drum techniques: cross-stick, rim shot, Texas shuffle, fourway coordination are tested alongside single and double strokes, paradiddles, flams and ruffs, rolls, hands and feet patterns
Grade 6: Timesignature changes, bassdrum doubles, polyrhythms, 6/8 trip-hop groove. Single and double strokes, paradiddles, ratamacues, rolls, Stylistic Studies
Grade 7: Broken 16th-note rolls, 32nd-note rolls, ‘Amen Break'. Single strokes developed, paradiddle-diddles, Pataflafla, single and double ratamacues, 7 and 9-stroke rolls, Stylistic Studies
Grade 8: Double bass drum, advanced stylistic grooves, complex time-signature changes, and syncopation. Single strokes developed, alternative paradiddlediddles, Swiss Army triplet, pataflafla, single and double triple ratamacue, rolls, Stylistic Studies.
